Short Dawg was born in Houston, Texas. As a young kid, Short didn’t have much of an interest in pursuing a rap career. It wasn’t until the age of eighteen that Short began showing signs of something special. His brother, Blu Mega, began listening to some of Short’s crazy freestyles. His brother urged him to pursue and work at his talent. Ultimately, Short moved to Atlanta, GA to begin his rap career.

After the releases of a few mixtapes, Short was discovered by Hip-Hop moguls Russell Simmons and Jermaine Dupri. After a joint venture couldn’t be worked out, a bit of an auction battle pursued. Short ultimately decided to sign with Dupri’s So So Def, but still didn’t feel like he could reach his full potential there.

It was around this time Short Dawg and Lil Wayne began serious discussions to sign him over to Young Money, after being close friends for a number of years. After a seamless transition over to YMCMB, Short Dawg has found a label and crew to support the music he wants to create. Over the last years, Short has worked as hard as anyone to improve his music. That progress can most certainly be seen in songs such as, “Lean” and more recent songs such as, “Trouble On My Mind (Freestyle)”. Although the world has seen young artists from Young Money such as Drake and Nicki Minaj, there are still a number of artists ready to be introduced to the world. Short Dawg will most certainly be one of them.

When and where you born?

I was born in Houston, Texas. Mid-80’s.

Jason

When did you start rapping?

Short Dawg

When I was 18. My brother was doing stuff. They had a little group. I would just freestyle and kick it with them.

Jason

Your method of recording is quite difficult. You don’t use a pad or pen. Do you think starting out by freestyling helped you perfect this way of recording?

Short Dawg

Yea. I think so. I think quickly and words kinda come to me fast. I think starting out like that definitely helped me.

Jason

Is that something you had to work on over the years in order to perfect?

Short Dawg

It kinda comes naturally. As I work I continue to get better with it. It’s a continual process, but I can never die out. I can always learn and always get better. I can find different techniques.

Jason

When do you think of lines? Do you think of stuff during the day or once you get in the studio? Or both?

Short Dawg

If something comes to me during the day, then that’s just that. I’ll store it in my phone to use it later. I rarely look at my phone anyway, because new music brings new ideas. I’m always inspired at the moment. Once I’m inspired, something comes to me. I have stuff stored away…I might use it one day. You never know.

Jason

I know you were previously signed to one or two other labels. What was it like when you signed to Young Money.

Short Dawg

I think it was cool cuz Wayne and I had already been friends for a minute. We had always wanted to be partners. I was eighteen and going through the motions I was in. It was like now it’s official, but we had always been rockin’. So that was cool.

Jason

What has it been like working with Wayne and the rest of the Young Money crew? How do they influence you when you’re in the studio?

Short Dawg

Their like a team to me. It’s kinda like playing one on one. You’re showcasing ideas to each other. When you’re in the studio with your crew, you see what everyone else comes with and bounce ideas off each other. We just try to keep that great music pumping out.

Jason

Yea, well you guys most certainly do. During the time Wayne was incarcerated, you had a shout out to him in almost every one of your videos. What has it been like since he got back?

Short Dawg

Yea man, it’s cool. You never wanna see one of your peers in there. I don’t even wish that upon none of my worst enemies. It’s just not a place you want to go. It’s a place meant for people that made mistakes. He was in there wrongly accused, so that made it a little worse. It’s a tough day for anyone to go through. I have a father and an older brother that are in jail, so it hits me a little harder than most. I’ve been dealing with imprisonment my whole life.

Jason

How have you dealt with that?

Short Dawg

I talk about it in my music. I get it off my chest. A lot of people who know me, know how I was brought up and know how it’s gotten me to where I am today.

Jason

Over the years, it seems as though you have developed a crazier flow and even crazier lyrics. How do you keep digging deeper to find creative lines and flows like that?

Short Dawg

I just stay focused on what I do good. I always want to get better. I always want to challenge myself no matter how good someone says I am. I always want to be better than the last time you heard me. If I feel like I haven’t been heard enough, it pushes me and gives me that drive to work even more.

Jason

I also got to ask you, where do your nicknames Short Dawg and Elvis Freshley come from?

Short Dawg

Short was a name they gave me when I was in middle school. They used to call me Shorty. In high school I was the smallest dude on the basketball team. My home boy Frank was the starting small forward and he started calling me Short Dawg. When I started rapping, the name kind of stuck with me. Elvis Freshley was a name I came up with because I was always talking about fresh things and fresh that. It also kind of enables me to be in an alternative, creative character for me when I’m making music.

Jason

What can we expect to hear in the near future? You talk about all these different genres?

Short Dawg

World domination. Haha. Got something coming out on Halloween. The Fresh album is coming out along with two mix tapes. We also back in the studio working on the second Young Money album. Just a lot of hard work, you know.

Protegé(e) Magazine had the opportunity to speak with Short Dawg and ask him a few questions about his music career, being the newest artist on Young Money, his alter ego Elvis Freshley, and his current projects. Take a look at what Short Dawg had to say:

PM: Describe your alter ego, Elvis Freshley.

SD: It was just a name I came up with for my music. Short Dawg is most taken for a rapper. Elvis Freshley is the name I attached to for the type of music I make.

PM: At what point did you decide to take your music seriously?

SD: By the time my brother was incarcerated, I was 18, who pushed me to do it. I didn’t want to do it at first, but after he got incarcerated, I kind of leaned towards it.

PM: How did you handle the ups & downs that the industry had to offer, especially since this wasn’t your initial chosen field?

SD: You know just staying focused on recording. At the end of the day, the music is what matters. A lot of people try to derail you in this business, but if you stay on top of music, there’s only so much they can do to stop you.

PM: What is it like being the newest artist on Young Money?

SD: It’s cool, but it’s a lot of hard work tho. For the most part, it’s a very fortunate situation to be in.

PM: What lessons did you learn from Lil’ Wayne about being in this industry?

SD: You can start out at the bottom of the totem pole. You know, Lil’ Wayne was nowhere near where he is right now. When he first came, people didn’t even see him coming. So, always just stay working hard, and jump on top of the game. That’s what I’m gonna do.

PM: How did you feel when you heard your song on the radio, or see your video for the first

time?

SD: I just smiled because it’s something that you kind of expect. When it happens, it’s like aight, cool. It lets you know that you got a long way to go. You know, I just smiled and kept it moving

because I don’t wanna get caught up right now. I got other things to look forward to.

PM: What are your techniques when creating your rap?

SD: I kind of have an out-of-body experience. My mind just takes over, especially when I hear something that’s inspiring. I kind of just leave myself and I come up with the stuff I come up with because I don’t see myself doing it. I don’t write it down. It just kind of happens.

PM: What is a typical day for you when you’re not working?

SD: I’m probably riding around in my car listening to beats, seeing family members, friends, and going to the gym; something like that. I work everyday. The only time I don’t work is if I overwork myself day in day out. I try to be in the studio every night.

PM: What should aspiring rappers look out for when entering this industry?

SD: Paperwork. It’s the part of the business when they put in those contracts.

PM: What projects are you currently working on?

SD: I’m getting ready to drop, “Adventures of Drakenstein.” That’s coming soon. The Fresh album’s all wrapped up. I’m finishing the footage on it. My Young Money debut album is coming

SHORT DAWG is a member of Young Money since last year and a friend of Lil Wayne , with whom he collaborated on songs like " Money in the way "or Me and my drank . " He was previously signed to Def Jam but now a new stage with one of the most powerful teams of rap, but relax. On the contrary. He spends every morning in the Atlanta studio working on his poems. SWAGGA MUSIC had the opportunity to talk to him and this is what he told us.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Many people I first heard the song " Me and My Drank "featuring Lil Wayne. When you meet him?

SHORT DAWG : It was at least 2007. We had, you know, friends in common, and he also had heard me as an artist. We leave the same area, and Mack Maine , who is currently the president of Young Money , came and introduced us.

SWAGGA MUSIC: How many hours do you spend in the studio each day?

SHORT DAWG: I'm in the studio every week. Depends on the day. Some nights I'm going on 10 or 11 and return at 6 or 7 am.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Are you going to study at night and not by the day?

SHORT DAWG: Yes. I do a lot of work at night. They rarely go to the study day.

SWAGGA MUSIC: When you signed to Young Money?

SHORT DAWG : Last year.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Before you were with Def Jam. How was the experience? I was not so good as now ...

SHORT DAWG: Well, it was different. Russell was back in the game and I was signed to his label ... It was a new situation and they did not really have a full team on the label. There are a lot of things that happen when a matter of power. On the label they did not have much experience in regard to dealing with new artists.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Maybe this is why, you've had several mixtapes studio album but has not yet arrived. Are you working on it?

SHORT DAWG: Yes, I am currently working on it.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Must be a very competitive atmosphere to be a member of Young Money. In what ways have you changed since you signed?

SHORT DAWG: I would not call it competition because we do not compete with each other to see who is better. Is more about motivating you know .. and well, I'm working with Young Money more and I'm recording with force.

SWAGGA MUSIC : What is the role of the new Lil Wayne Young Money artists?

SHORT DAWG : He is letting me do what I'm doing. Most of the time come and listen to any idea that I may have or come to me with ideas and questions. We help each other.

SWAGGA MUSIC : I read that you can sing, not just rapping. Is it true?

SHORT DAWG: (laughs) I have some songs for the girls.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Maybe we could sing something to see how you do.

SHORT DAWG: I need to drink water before doing so.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Okay, maybe next time.

SHORT DAWG : Yeah, maybe next time.

SWAGGA MUSIC: I'd like to ask you about Nicki Minaj. She is one of the few rappers famous and probably one of the few women on the team of Young Money. You think it's harder for her because of this?

SHORT DAWG: Do I think it is harder? Of course. It's a bit difficult for a woman in this industry because there are many men in power ...

SWAGGA MUSIC: You must also collaborated with Sean Kingston "She said stop." How was that experience?

SHORT DAWG: It was good. Sean Kingston is a cool guy.

SWAGGA MUSIC: Lil Wayne's album "Tha Carter IV" is now finished. Has confirmed it. Have you heard?

SHORT DAWG: Yes, I have heard almost everything. It's amazing, is amazing. Like other "Carters" wonderful.

SWAGGA MUSIC: What advice would you give to those starting in rap?

SHORT DAWG: They are focused, work hard and put many hours in the studio. If you work hard, you get benefits from it.

Short Dawg a studious rapper who mastered his flow in college at the University of Texas A&M. He went there on an academic scholarship majoring in Philosophy. “All of a sudden I ended up in the school paper as the rapper on campus, I was doing radio interview at the school it was crazy” says Short Dawg

After the end of freshman year he decided to just focus on music. Short Dawg was discovered by Russell he was one of the first to sign to Russell Simmons Music Group. A joint venture that RSMG made with Jermaine Dupri’s SoSoDef Essentially resulted in Short Dawg being housed under RSMG/SoSoDef. Things didn’t go as planned over there. Short Dawg’s career made a giant leap when Lil’ Wayne featured him on “Me and My Drank” he made the decision to expect the offer to the Young Money Cash Money crew after two years of friendship with Lil’Wayne. Short says “being in the studio when I was with RSMG was just like me and my manger or someone from the label. But now with YMCM I get to record with my peers. Which is always a challenge it makes me work harder, it feels good just having people around you to help with the music; they’re there to aid you whenever you need a hook or a verse. Rather than being there to point you in a direction. Short Dawg recently released Southern Flame Spitta Vol. 4 a mixtape that has a compilation of industry beats with him freestyle over them. The mixtape has received over 20,000 downloads. Moreover, without ever utilizing a pen and pad, or Blackberry to write his lyrical punch lines he seems steadily on his way to superstardom.

Young Money, is arguably one of the hottest recording labels at the moment in the industry and literally has at it's fingertips tons of talent. In that corps of talent is rap artist Short Dawg a Houston native who is lighting up the mixtape trail. His latest mixtape to hit the scene, Southern Flame Spitta 4, has the ear of the street. Short Dawg has had a tumultuous career including a stint with hip-hop mogul Russell Simmons' Music Group (RSMG) before becoming part of what he referred to as the “winning team” in Young Money. Finally, while he hasn't reached the level of stardom of his fellow Young Money counterparts such as Lil Wayne, Drake or Nicki Minaj, the rising star still has his fair share of fans. It certainly sounds like he is gaining momentum on his Young Money colleagues. –ramone mack

Describe the mentality of a rap artist.

Well, I cannot speak for other people, but for me making music is the most important part and its like you're using a different part of your brain.

What was your inspiration behind your two latest mixtapes Southern Flame Spitta 3 and Southern Flame Spitta 3.5?

The fans no doubt are my inspiration. A lot of them were feeling the first two mix tapes and wanted an encore, and an artist always responds to the fans ... actually I just dropped Southern Fame Spitta 4 last month.

How does it feel to be a part of essentially the hottest rap record label at the moment?

I mean it's always good to be with the winning team. Actually, me and Birdman were just talking about how I grew up listening to Young Money and am how I am part of the record label now. When I was younger, I used to have my Juvenile Army bandanna on. So it's definitely special to have grown up looking up to some of these cats, and now to be with them is really special.

Most people are under the impression that being a rap artist is all fame and glory. Can you explain the hard work and the different facets of your job behind the scenes, the things that people don't see?

What people don't see is the different personalities and types of people that you have to deal with. There are some people out there who don't even have a talented bone in their body trying to throw salt and bring you down quickly. But you just have to stay focused and keep on your own grind.

HHH: How did you come up with the name Short Dawg?

Short Dawg: Actually that name was given to me in high school, by the basketball team.

I was the smallest dude on the team, and they would always call me shorty. So… that’s how I got the name.

HHH: What is it like working with some of the finest people in hip hop? Like Russel Simmons, and Jermaine Dupri?

Short Dawg: It’s a blessing that my talent has got me this far, so anybody that I work with so far as a Icon, or a pioneer. Just makes me feel that much good about my craft.

HHH: What is the interest or what is it like signing with Young Money?

Short Dawg: Again is like working with people that’s been doing it,

you know. He’s like almost 20 years in. So for somebody to be taking interest in me it’s a blessing.

HHH: Everybody has this question. Is it true that you don’t use no pen no pad?

Short Dawg: Not at all No Pen No Pad! I happen to be fortunate to be able to know what I’m gonna say, and remember to do it!

HHH: How does it feel like working with Lil Wayne?

Short Dawg: It’s fun you know. You see how hard he works,

so you just try to match his drive, and hope to be as successful as he is!

HHH: What do you feel about all the blogs with rumors about Young Money, Like Lil Wayne, or drake?

Short Dawg: It’s all a bunch of talk, at the end of the day all promotion is good promotion. So it don’t matter.

Drank and Dank (D&D): Alright we got Short Dawg in the house with drankanddank.blogspot.com. How you doing today?

Short Dawg (SD): chilling man, chilling, chilling

D & D: Alright you just released a mixtape Southern Flame Spitta vol. 4, what kind of reception is it getting?

SD: Aw man everyone loving it man, I just appreciate it. I put a lot of hard work into it. It took a lot to make it happen, but it's been done.

D &D: You're a Young Money artist, what kind of interaction have you had with Lil Wayne since he been home?

SD: You said what kind of reaction I've had from Wayne since he came home? I mean you know he's just glad everyone doing good, and kept the movement moving along while he was down. For the most part he just happy to be back

D & D: How much interaction have you had with him?

SD: We done kicked it a few times, we just came back from Vegas together, we was up there celebrating Nicki album release party. That's how we do, we just keep it going.

D & D: Have you started recording for your retail release yet?

SD: Yeah, yeah, I've been recording on that since my days at Def Jam. I got over 200, 300 songs man.

D & D: How you going to narrow it down?

SD: I don't know man it's going to be a hard choice. Me and my team going to sit down and try to pick the best songs for y'all.

D & D: You moved to Atlanta from Houston, to pursue your music. While there you met Russell Simmons. How did you meet him, and what effect did he have on your career?

SD: Just putting in work man, you know Russell had happened to hear my music from one of his guys that worked at his label. Once he heard it he had me fly into New York. You know, put a deal together on the spot. For the most part Russell is a great mentor to have. For one he's an excellent person for all the positive things he do around the community, not just the hip-hop culture. He always has something positive to say. He always points me in the right direction. What I should be doing out of the booth, outside of the studio, outside of being an artist. It's great to have a person like Russell still on my team after all these years.

D & D: You've been on SoSo Def, and now your on Young Money. What are someof the differences between the two camps?

SD: Well on Young Money, you know that we got a team of other artists, not just a label. Not just people who sit behind a desk and tell you about music, what kind of songs to make for the public. You have experienced artists who work with you on the daily. If I need a verse, need a hook, I can just call one of my bros or my sis. They come through for me right then and there. That's opposed to having to go through the label to get a verse from so and so, call this label, see if I can get their artist to do this.

D & D: You also perform as Elvis Freshley. What can you do as Elvis that you can't do as Short?

SD: It's nothing that I can't do. It's a name I gave myself with the other music I do, the alternative music.

D & D: What do you mean by alternative?

SD: Just a different genre

D & D: Are you going to drop a Elvis Freshley mixtape?

SD: I might. I might, I mix it in with what I do rapping. At the same time I put a couple Elvis Freshley type joints on the volume 4. The "9 to 5" and the "House Party 4" are leaning more to the Elvis Freshley feel I'm going to be coming with.in the near future.

D & D: Your from Houston which has one of the strongest hip-hop scenes. How has that influenced you?

SD: Oh man, I grew up in that culture. In the Screw culture, the UGK , the Fat Pat, the Big Moe. That's where I get my slang from.

D & D: What's your favorite UGK album?

SD: Ridin Dirty

D & D: Who would you like to workwith outside of Young Money in the future?

SD: Jada

D & D: Do you read the comments section underneath your music online?

SD: Yeah, you know I check for the feedback, I mostly pay attention to the positive and not so much the haters. I know the haters are just a fan without a face. I'm the type of person on Twitter that if I see someone talking about it negatively, I'll reach out to them. Try to give them a clear understanding. When I do it usually comes back around that their a fan and don't know how to say they're a fan. They always turn their words around, and tell me how they really do like my music.

D & D: So how do you react to the extreme comments like your the best ever or wack as fuck?

SD: I don't listen to neither one of those. I feel like I'm a great rapper, a great artist. To say the best ever that's a whole other category. I haven't even got that far in my career to give myself that title.As far as wackest I know I'm far from that. Neither one of those comments move me, I'm looking for genuine. You know what's genuine.

D & D: You went to Texas A & M,what did you major in?

SD: Philosophy

D & D: How far did you get in that? Learn anything good?

SD: I did a year. I learned a lil bit. I still read it to this day.

D & D: What should we look for from Short Dawg in 2011?

SD: Look for the Fresh album top of the year, producedby my dog the Honorable C-Note.

Recently GlobalGrind had the chance to talk to Short Dawg, one of the core members of Lil' Wayne's Young Money crew. During our conversation, Short Dawg spoke on how Weezy has changed from his release from prison, whether or not he feels pressure to live up to the success of Drake and Nicki Minaj, and more. Check out what he had to say.

GlobalGrind: How did you meet Lil' Wayne and how did you get down with Young Money?

Short Dawg: I met Wayne around 3 years ago through Mack Maine - Mack and I were cool, we did a couple of songs together, so he introduced me to Wayne and we just hit it off. It was a basic friendship, and after we started kicking it, we did a couple of songs, and while he was building his Young Money brand he asked me to come be a part of it, and the rest is history.

GG: Have you noticed a difference in Wayne from befoe he went to jail to now?

Short Dawg: He just seems more focused. He got an extra boost of energy, I don't know where it comes from, I guess just being locked up, caged in a room. It's like a little puppy when you leave him in his little cage for too long, once you open that gate he just starts running around in circles. It's just all of that energy coming out.

GG: Houston is one of the great towns of rap music - there are so many legends from Z-Ro, UGK, DJ Screw - who influenced you to start rapping when you were coming up?

SD: The funny thing about it was, being from Houston and that whole culture of the screw music, you automatically just take part in that because that's all you hear, every corner you turn you hear everybody banging Screw, UGK, Z-Ro, Fat Ball, Big Moe, etc. The whole thing is they would go to the screw house and freestyle, so everyone in Houston pretty much began as a freestyler. Myself, I didn't take it too serious when I started because I was just doing it as wreckless fun.

GG: How old when you started taking it seriously?

SD: I was around 18 years-old. I got a late start. I was a good freestyler - it's funny, because I did it for entertainment. I wouldn't even take part in any freestyles if there weren't any girls around or a big crowd, I'd probably be the last one to come in and say something and everyone would go crazy, and then I'd leave - that's all I wanted to do, was just shock the crowd and leave.

GG: When you're making music now is it still a freestyle-type process or is it more structured?

SD: Pretty much, I still don't write at the end of the day. My early stuff I would, because I had to learn how to count bars and how to put hooks in, but now I basically just do it off of emotions. Sometimes I might go over 16 bars or under 16 or do a 4 bar hook or 8 bar hook or I might not even do a hook because I finished what I had to say - it's just pure emotion now. I go in when I get there, I don't think of the song until I get to the studio unless it's a song idea, but most of the time I don't make the song until I hear the beat. Everything I do is fresh, brand new. I never go in the studio with a prepared song because I'm one of those people that's inspired by music. If I'm not inspired by the beat I can't do it. Just like when I was freestyling if there wasn't a crowd or some girls I wouldn't do it, I'd hear people beating on the tables and walk straight by. I've always been one of those people that moves off of inspiration.

GG: Could name for us one beat out right now that makes you want to go in?

SD: The beat that made me go in was that "Bill Gates" (off of Lil' Wayne's I Am Not A Human Being). I was there when Wayne recorded it in Miami, and when I heard that beat I was like "Oh my God" - so when I finally got my hands on it, I just chewed on it.

GG: Does Wayne give you tips or suggestions when you're in the studio with him?

SD: Not so much. Wayne is also a fan of what I do, because that's how we got to this point. We were sitting there having a conversation - and the thing is, he hadn't even recognized that I was Short Dawg the rapper when we first hit it off, he'd known me as Short Dawg my little partner that kick it with me - and when he heard the song I did with Bow Wow he was like "yo, I heard this song that sounds like my little dude from Houston - man you a beast," and that's how our whole arrangement got together.

GG: What are you up to now?

SD: Just dropped a mixtape hosted by Don Cannon, getting ready to drop a single from the Fresh album which is dropping at the top of the year. Just trying to stay busy. We're not sure what single we're going to go with first, we're still in the process of picking one, but we're coming with it though. The album I'm putting out, Fresh, is inspired by the film of the same name. Everyone knows that I say "fresh" all of the time, to the point where people started calling me Fresh, and if you ever noticed in the movie, Fresh was a hustler-type cat that had contact with his dad but was raised by the streets. He learned everything from the streets, and that's kind of the way I learned my life. When I saw that movie, it just showed me myself in that, so my whole album is based upon that movie because that little guy Fresh, that's me. So it's all inspired by that movie and the things I went through in my life, but more in depth.

GG: This was a really big year for Young Money, from Drake to Nicki Minaj to Wayne coming back with "6'7" - do you ever feel pressure to perform as well as they have since you all are in the same crew?

SD: Not at all, you feel like you have the opportunity to. It's not pressure, it's like "we can do it as well!" because we all started at the same level at one point in live. Just seeing how your peers are doing and seeing how far they went with their situation just lets me know that one day I can be in that position as well, so it gives me something to look forward to.

GG: What is your goal for next year?

SD: My goal is to get this Fresh album to you guys, and hopefully you'll see another Young Money member - myself - follow the same success pattern that Wayne and Drake paved.

With the recent release of Lil Wayne and Cory Gunz's "6'7" single, SOHH reached out to Young Money's Short Dawg to get his reaction to his crew's anthem.

Applauding Weezy's lyrics on the record, Short said he was especially excited over his longtime friend and recently inducted YM labelmate Cory Gunz' display of showmanship.

"Everyone is hearing Lil Wayne doing what he do," Short told SOHH referring to Weezy's bars. "And Cory, that's my dog. Me and Cory have been cool since he was back on Def Jam. A lot of people don't know me and Cory have a cool relationship. Cory is like one of my comrades coming over to Young Money, getting drafted. It's like when LeBron James came over to the Heat with Dwayne Wade. We were already cool and it just makes it that much better. Man, listen, both of them [are] awesome at what they do and ain't nobody can top what they did. Period. I personally haven't gotten my hand on the beat yet but if I touch it [for a remix], you already know what's gonna happen."

What’s up everyone?! Today I was lucky too interview one off the Young Money Artist who goes by the name “Short Dawg” or ElvisFreshley. Born on 6 January 1986 Sunnyside section in Houston TX a young man would eventually come to be known as the emerging rap superstar named Short Dawg learn the art of freestyle from struggling emcee at an early age helped hone the skills that would ultimately lead him to Hip-hop impresario Russell Simmons Although young Short Dawg is wise beyond his years, which he attributes to maintain a necessary focus by staying in school to acquire the knowledge he needed to keep him sharp but also learning to balance on the streets with the books.

Q. What is it like being a rapper and being part off the Young Money/Cash Money family?

A. For me its like when a player gets drafted to the Lakers or the Bulls. Its an honor to be with a winning team. A team i came up watching, partying to their music, learning their lyrics.. Makes me work that much harder to leave my mark and help further the brand.

Q. Name a artist you would like to work with in the future?

A. Pharrell

Q. What gave you the name off Short Dawg? Is there a reason behind the name?

A. My homeboy from my highschool basketball team.. everyone called me shorty but Frank started callin me short dawg.

Q. If you could hang with any one who is dead who would it be and why?

A. haha.. ben franklin. Cuz i keep a picture of him on me at all times might as well get to know him.

Q. How did you end up becoming friends with Lil Wayne?

A. The white cup introduced us.

Q. If you could give anyone advice on becoming a rapper what would it be?

A.it ain’t for everybody..

Q. How would you compare your early life to now? Has it made a huge impact on you?

A. I learned alot. a whole lot, but overall the things i’ve been through in this business has made me wiser with my decision making.

Q. If you wasn’t a rapper what would you be doing right now?

A. i really cant answer that honestly because i have so many other talents, i can say that i wouldn’t be working a regular 9-5 though.

Q. Do you live by a motto? If so what is that motto?

A. Keep it real, even with the fakes.

Q. Who is one off your idols?

A. i dont idolize.. i admire anyone who has come from a similar situations in which have and made something of themself

Q. What is a memorable experience you’ve had so far?

A. When snoop stopped me at JD’s studio and said “i wanna do a song wit u”

Being on the Young Money roster comes with a lot of responsibility, but the Southern Flame Spitta gave HitHipHop insight on how experience, composure and versatility will take him where he wants to go in this industry. Short Dawg also shares his feelings about Lil Kim’s words directed at Nicki Minaj & his team. hip hop websites being seized & a lot more in this exclusive interview. Check it out after the jump!

First things first, what does the hip-hop game mean to you?

It means everything to mean me man cuz I’m part of the hip hop culture, you know. To me it’s just my whole way of life. My whole daily routine is based around hip hop.

And what is your daily routine? Describe a day in your shoes.

Uhm, I try to wake up around noon. Cause I probably been in the studio till about six, so I try to at least wake up around noon. Get up, eat. Check my emails for any features that came through or any songs, new beats. Download them, do a little tweeting. Then probably roll out to the streets. Uh, be in a couple cars see what’s going on, slide by the studio or go by a friends crib until like 10 or 11 and that’s when I like to fall off to the studio, unless it’s one of those days that I’m at the crib watching movies and that’s pretty much how it go. It’s just a ongoing cycle everyday.

How was being on tour & once being signed to So So Def prepared you in this industry?

You know it thought me a lot cause back then I was much younger so I was pretty new to the industry so it allowed me and it prepared me for what I’m seeing now and what’s to come in the future, you know?

Definitely. Now can you name some of your musical influences?

Being that my favorite rapper is Jadakiss & my favorite group is The Lox, I grew up listening to them so I’m influenced by that. And I’m also influenced by the whole Screw culture back in Texas. DJ Screw, Fat Pat, Big Hawk, Lil Keke, Big Moe, you know, UGK of course. And definetly Maroon 5, I love all they work.

Now I’ve heard that you attended the University of Texas A&M. Do you plan on going back to school? And what was your major?

I studied Philosophy but as far as going back, I don’t know. I would have to complete the task at hand right now before I consider going back. But it could happen!

Where does your nickname “Elvis Freshley” originate from?

Everybody knows I say Fresh a lot. I might see my homeboy and like “What up Fresh?” or “Fresh what’s good?”. And I was recording/working on some music with a producer friend of mine and I adopted the name “Elvis Freshley” cuz I’ve been working on alternative music as well.

You just released a new mixtape Southern Flame Spitta [4] last week. If you had to pick your favorite joint off the project, which would it be?

“Stay Fresh” joint with me and Birdman. “9 To 5″ with me and Shanell. “Miss Me” is one of my favorite freestyles along with “June 27th” - which I called “For My City” on the tape tho.

You also got a track with Lil Wayne on the mixtape as well - any plans for more now that he’s been released?

Definitely. We stay working. I’m actually about to head back to Miami right now so lookout for more Short Dawg/Lil Wayne collabs to come.

And Weezy, how’s he been doing?

He’s great. He’s great. Back at work like he never missed a beat.

Good to hear. What are your plans for 2011?

I’m anxious to try & get this album out next year. So we focusing on building on my buzz, building my brand so that 2011 not only will my neighbors & my peers know my talent, but the whole world.

Is there anyone specific that you would like to work with on your upcoming project?

Definitely wanna work with Pharrell & Swizz Beatz. Me & Swizz known each other for a good 4 years now so it we be great to finally work together.

Word, good luck with that. Now I’m not sure if you’ve heard about the US Government recently seizing a handful of major hip hop blog sites.. If so, what are your thoughts?

I don’t really know too much about that but to whatever the case may be you know I feel bad for people who use that as their musical outlet. And to the hosts of the websites, if there was any illegal activity going on, I feel bad that it happened but I know that a lot of times, you know, people that don’t have deals or new artists use those blog sites to get their music heard & noticed, so it kinda sucks that it happened.

Definitely, let’s hope they leave us alone! Now before we let you go, can you comment on Lil Kim’s recent diss track Black Friday aimed at Nicki Minaj & your Young Money fam?

I don’t get involved with that, she dunno what she saying. You know that’s how it is sometimes when you once was at a certain place in the game and you look up and you’re not there no more, know what I’m saying? Sometimes people do what they gotta do to survive or stay in the game but I never understood why she came at Nicki in the first place but at the end of the day, it is what it is, know what I’m saying?

Short Dawg Interview with Gowhere Hip Hop

Short Dawg a.k.a. "Elvis Freshley," from Young Money Entertainment, has been the talk of the week. His much anticipated mixtape, Southern Flame Spitta Vol. 4, dropped this week and so far it has been reviewed as the best out of all the volumes. "9 To 5" feat. Young Money's Shanell has to be one of my favorites. This track is what he would call "fresh," and shows his ability to cross into the alternative genre. I also like "Baddest" feat. Lloyd and "Lean" feat. Lil Wayne. This project shows growth in his skills as an artist and has definitely got me excited for his album, Fresh, coming at the top of the year. GWHH: I am just going to cut to the point, Southern Flame Spitta Vol. 4 (your most anticipated mixtape yet) just dropped, we want to know how is the mixtape doing so far?

SD: Oh man, from what I see it is doing great. It's gotten great reviews and the fans are loving it. I am very grateful and cannot wait to see how it continues to grow.

GWHH: How do you feel it is going to do compared to 3 and 3.5?

SD: I think every series and year gets better and better. I went back to the origins with this one because i got with Don Cannon. We lost touch for 3 and 3.5, but on this one we brought it back.

GWHH: What are some of your favorite tracks?

SD: A couple of my favorites are "Money in My Pocket," the 9 to 5 song with Shanell, and my favorite freestyle would have to be "Miss Me."

GWHH: There were some great collabs on this mixtape, Wayne, Shanell, Lloyd, Sterling Sims, and Birdman just to name a few, who can we expect to see you working with in the future or who would you like to work with?

SD: I am going to continue all the songs with Young Money. I've been friends with Swizz Beatz for a while, and we have mutual respect for each other. So I definitely look forward to working with him. I also would like to work with Pharell on the production side of things. But as far as working with other artists, I'd work with anyone who has a mutual respect for my skills.

GWHH: A lot of your fans still remember your verse from "Me and My Drank," what would you say would be your favorite verse of all time? Do you have a favorite punch line that you stick to?

SD: Verse of all time for me? I have no idea. I hear people quoting stuff I don't even remember I said. A punch line that I quote a lot when I am writing and in my bio would be "All the models come every place I be, and all the young girls want me like a fake I.D."

GWHH: You have adopted the name "Elvis Freshley" because of your alter ego, could you talk a little bit about how you got the name and what it means?

SD: Well I say fresh a lot, they call me fresh and everyone knows that if they get in my car they can hear some Maroon 5 as well as other alternative music. So once I started recording alternative music the name kinda went together.

GWHH: When you say you plan on crossing into other genres of music, which ones in particular are you going to focus on?

SD: I wouldn't say that, I wasn't trying to change my style or nothing like that. It's just something that was in me and I enjoyed listening to it. Once I realized I could make it, I haven't stopped yet.

GWHH: Since signing with Young Money, it seems like it is a perfect fit, what is the chemistry like between you and the other Young Money artists?

SD: It's really like an over-sized family. We all call each other when we need verses and on the holidays. It's real fun. I enjoy it.

GWHH: What are you working on now?

SD: Fresh, an album I am putting together at the top of the year, inspired by the motion picture film and produced by C.N.O.T.E. I am also recording my Young Money debut album, as well as working on a bunch of features, and I just got an idea for my next mixtape. I wanna call it "The Alarm Clock."

GWHH: Some of our fans want to know where you get your "sizzurp" from and how you come up with the ideas for the drawings on your Styrofoam cups?

SD: No comment on the first question. As far as drawings, I have always been into drawing. I used to compete in the rodeo drawing competitions back in Texas. They would give us a blank piece of construction paper and tell us to draw our idea of the rodeo. I ended up winning a few first place competitions, and that is why a white Styrofoam cup is like a white sheet of paper for me.

GWHH: Lastly, when can we expect to see you in Chicago?

SD: My homeboy Brian Lwuh plays for the Bears there, so I definitely want to go check out a game before the season's over. As far as performing there, whenever I get a chance I will be there. I love the Midwest.

You would think that being an artist on Young Money would turn someone into a fame monster with an ego that can fill up a room. But Young Money’s Short Dawg and veteran to the game was far from that. He was extremely polite, charming, super witty and not afraid to say whats on his mind. In our interview with Short Dawg we got down and dirty discussing everything from music to groupies, Kim Kardashian and Young Money’s plans upon Lil Wayne's release. Check it out!

Who is Short Dawg?

SD: A Young guy from Houston Texas who just wants to share his gift with the world.

Now that you live in ATL do you visit Houston often? Do you have the same friends?

SD: Oh yea, I get back as much as I can. You know as life changes you meet different people but those that I was close with before, we are closer now than ever.

Have you visited Philly recently, what did you think?

SD: Yeah I just left, it was cool. I love the city, I’m a big fan of the eagles?

Wow that’s surprising!

SD: I been an eagles fan since Randall Cunningham, but you probably don’t know who that is (laughing)

I actually just started watching football, so that I can get closer to finding me a husband, but I do know who he is (laughing) So, do you have any groupies?

SD: No comment (laughs) Yeah I guess but who doesn’t, the guy at Wal-Mart can have groupies. What exactly are groupies?

I would say groupies are girls waiting for you when you get off the tour bus or waiting for you at your hotel room, etc.

SD: I have fans, but I’m not sure if they groupies. If you’re a groupie announce ya self (laughs)

Are you currently available?

SD: I am always available until the curtain closes

You sound so smooth are you a ladies’ man?

SD: (laughs) Ladies like me so I guess I’m a ladies’ man

What types of girls do you like? A lot of guys are into dating white girls now, do you date outside ya race? You can say yes, I won’t judge?

SD: I date all types of woman, I don’t discriminate. Not necessarily white, but no particular type.

On the topic of white girls, who would you rather be intimate with Kim K or Amber Rose?

SD: That’s a hard one..umm. I’ll have to say Kim because I like hair. Me and my girl can’t be going to the barbershop together .

(laughter)

I’m from Philly so I’m not going to comment, but I feel you. So, tell me about your music and upcoming projects?

SD: I just completed my new mix tape Southern Flame Spitta. It’s a blend of rap and alternative. According to the net it’s my most anticipated album so far. I also have a project with Honorable C Note, based off the movie Fresh.

What was the concept behind that?

SD: I liked the movie, plus I say fresh a lot, people know me for saying Fresh. Fresh is a way of life. So we are going to do videos and everything based around that movie.

What are some of your favorite tracks on the Southern Flame Spitta?

SD: I would say Blues and Eraser.

Eraser that’s an interesting title what’s that song about?

SD: Eraser is about a relationship that didn’t work out and instead of missing her, I’d rather not have known her or the pain.

That’s seems very emotional, you’re not worrying about being hard?

SD: (Laughs) I ain’t Ice Cube, I don’t gotta be hard.

Did you watch the Bet Top Ten Rappers Special?

SD: I didn’t watch for a few reasons. I wasn’t really sure about how they were judging artist. When I think of the best rapper, I look at lyric that’s it. I’m not looking at how many albums sold or how many fans they have on twitter. I judge on am I moved, like “Damn, I can’t believe he said that!” But I heard my favorite rapper came in #9 and that’s crazy.

How was it attending the BET Hip Hop Awards? Was there anyone you were looking forward to meeting?

SD: That was my first time attending the BET Awards so it was cool. There was not anyone in [articular that I wanted to meet because I’ve been in the game for a minute so I knew all the artist there. They have respect for me as an artist and I have equal respect for them. It was more of a congrats on your success and see you when I get there. It’s a beautiful thing.

So, I know that you and Young Money are like a family, but in any family there are arguments and disagreements. Do you guys ever argue?

SD: Truthfully we don’t be around each other enough to argue. Usually there are like 2-3 of us together at a time, so when we all get together it’s like a reunion, there are no fights. But if we were all sharing a house and I was sharing a bathroom with Nikki, then maybe. (laughing)

Have you spoke to Wayne since he’s been away?

SD: I reached out to Wayne a few times and basically let him know that we missed him and can’t wait til he gets home.

Does Young Money Have something big planned for Lil Wayne when he gets home?

SD: I don’t know what’s going on, but when I get the call I’ll be there. But he might not want to party, he might want to just ride around oh his jet skis. But if I get a call that something’s going on I’ll be there.

One last question, what did Short Dawg do this weekend?

SD: I can’t even remember. (ask someone in background) Oh yeah I was in the studio working working and that’s what I’m going to be doing the following weekend too.

The name might sound new to some, but Texas native and former Def Jam artist Short Dawg is one of the selected people that Lil Wayne signed during his spending spree while building his Young Money powerhouse. With the first wave of the YM assault under way, it’s time for the next batch of artists to come through, and Short Dawg is definitely at the head of that list.

You were signed back in 2005, but still haven’t had an album drop. How hard is it to stick with music through all the setbacks?
It has its moments where it’s tough because you have a lot of obstacles as a new artist when the albums don’t come out. In my situation it was an issue dealing with Russell’s new label and the president and a lot of beef that I didn’t know was going on, it was beyond my control working at Def Jam at the time. A lot of things went haywire and then I had my own situations with lawsuits and all that type of shit. People think just because you’re doing music you don’t live an actual real life and shit goes on in people’s lives, and on the creative side you get discouraged and shit, but you know that just comes with the territory of doing anything. It’s just as hard as being an athlete, you got to work hard at it and believe that it’s going to turn out for the best.

What would you say you were able to learn from all that?
I learned that being consistent is most important because regardless of the situation you’re in you still have fans at the end of the day. They don’t give a fuck if your situation is not as good as it’s supposed to be, they just want to hear that music, so you have to stay consistent through all of that. I just learned to be more wise with my surroundings and stay on top of my music and everything else will work itself out.

Why did it take two years for you to be officially signed to Young Money?
I was still signed to Def Jam at the time and I was trying to get a release, but at the same time Russ knew that I’m a good artist and he know my potential. To this day me and Russ still got a good relationship. I just got off the phone with a situation with Russ where he’s doing a reality show and he wants me to do the soundtrack for it and things like that. We got a couple of contests coming up and he’s still a part of my life. But as far as the label thing, I had to wait until Def Jam gave me a proper release because I didn’t want to go over to Young Money and still be on paperwork with Def Jam and you know they work. We go in and record a song and it becomes a hit and the Def Jam comes back like “ok appreciate y’all, let me take Short Dawg back off your hands.” It’s just me being a genuine person and not wanting to put them through no lawsuits or no paperwork. I just wanted to come when I was all the way clean and rid of my situation.

What made you feel like Young Money would be a good fit for you at this point in your career?
When working with anybody in this music stuff I got to believe in what I’m doing because I believe in myself, so if anybody believes in me just a third as much as I believe in myself than we on good terms. Wayne didn’t have to reach out, and he didn’t have to come to me and say get on this or do this and for him – it just meant something to me, like alright well this is somebody who believes in potential and my vision so it would good to work with them. Plus we was already friends, so to be cool on that level, then he really liked my music, it was a comfortable situation. With the whole Def Jam situation, I kind of went in that by myself. I didn’t have no team around me, all I had was my friends and they really don’t do what I do. So being around somebody that does what I do and is my friend as well it just makes it that much more comfortable.

Does being friends with your boss hurt or help when you’re making business decisions?
It depends on you because if you know what your level of friendship is with a person you know what to say and how to push, so you know how to get on their good side and their bad side. It’s really about you at the end of the day.

Is there a pecking order at Young Money or is everybody in the same boat?
It’s pretty much like training camp. You come into it and people know who the starters are, and even if you’re not a starter you’re fighting for a position. You’re still on the team so you want to give your best. If you’re just a supporter, you’re going to support as much as you can. If you’re a hook man, you’re going to lay the best hooks possible. If you good for a great 16 on this type of song, you’re going to do what your strong suit is. We’re all trying to keep the brand moving and keep coming behind each other.

Would you say being in that competitive atmosphere has helped bring out some of your better music?
I think it’s better for me, but I wouldn’t say it brought out my best music. I think it’s better because I’m not just doing it by myself and I have talented people around me. When we come together we put something that’s great together. At the same time, I still work well with myself. Prior to the Young Money situation I had great music, so it’s just keeping me fresh and keeping me on my toes because I have people around me who are equally as dope, if not better.

When is the debut album coming out and who’s going to be a part of it?
We’re dealing with the music industry so [it depends on] Billboards, but I’m looking to push out something real soon, scheduled for next year. Right now I’m continuing my Southern Flame Spitta series. I’m about to drop a street album of all original music called Fresh. It’s inspired by the motion picture film Fresh. That’s really my first official album because like I said, it’s original and fully produced and we’re going to distribute that. My fans have been waiting on an album since 2005 so we’re about to give them one with this Fresh project. But I’m continuing my mixtape series and official Young Money/Cash Money album will be coming shortly after that.

You’ve been getting a buzz with some singles off your mixtape series. Is this going to be a long-running series?
At the beginning of the time, it was just Southern Flame Spitta Volume 1, then it was Volume 2, and it kind of continued itself. Now that I got a solid base of people who like my music, they won’t let me stop the series. I started it out with Cannon for Volumes 1 and 2. Volume 3 me and Holiday hooked up, 3.5 DJ Rockstar and DJ Ill Will and me hooked up, and now I’m going back to Cannon for 4. We just going to keep it moving until they’re tired of hearing me rap.

How involved is Wayne with the development of artists on YM?
Wayne is the type of person that just leads by example. He’s not going to stand over you and correct your rhymes or pull you out the booth and say don’t say that, say this. Anybody that’s around him will see his work ethic and you’re going to learn something, if not you’re just ignorant because dude works extra hard and you wouldn’t want to be looked down on as a slacker around somebody who works that hard. First and foremost he teaches you hard work, and once you learn that, everything else just pretty much is ABC because hard work drives anything.

What can the fans expect from your Elvis Freshley persona?
I do a lot of recording in alternative music as well as balancing rap and mixtape stuff, you know album songs and songs from my Fresh project. I like to escape all that and get into my Elvis Freshley mode and do my alternative music as well because I’m a big fan of it. When I started doing it, I was working with my man Bei Major and he had these beats and they sounded like something I would actually listen to. I really adapted to it and once I started creating I couldn’t stop, so that’s where the whole Elvis Freshley thing came about. I’m at least 12 songs in on my Elvis Freshley project.

Are you going to be rapping over alternative beats or are you going to actually be experimenting with singing at all?
Both. The funny thing is I really can sing. I never really cared about doing so because I didn’t want to be an R&B singer because it’s kind of too soft spoken for me, but alternative is more mood music and that’s what I kind of like. I ain’t trying to serenade women all the time. Sometimes I just want to let you know how I feel and that’s what this alternative music lets me do.

When do you expect to have material released from the Elvis Freshley project?
I don’t know yet. I don’t want to confuse nobody by spitting all these bars and building a fan base of hip hop heads and then I come with the alternative music. I’m trying to find a way to work it in, but from what I see a lot of people are taking to it.

What is going to take for you to make it to that next level as a rap artist?
I just believe in keep working hard and everything will come in its due time. I ain’t going to sit here and gripe over how long it’s taking me to cross over, but at the same time I feel like I’m being molded into a better person and a more creative artist while in the process.
